Almost like home, that is if your home is the sleek ground floor of a restored 18th century building furnished with designer and vintage pieces. There are just four rooms and the chance to run into your fellow guests is small, or they have to be your fellow travellers if you rented the whole place to yourselves. Apart from the guest rooms there is only a small lounge which doubles as the breakfast room, pocket bar and mini cinema.
The comfort of the rooms is nothing less than a superior hotel: air conditioning, en-suite bathroom, flat-screen cable TV and DVD player. Unique touches all over: quirky floor lamps, a garden hose turned shower, LED-lighting changing the colors of your room every few seconds and a standard kitchen sink used in one of the bathrooms. I had the (only) room at the back, which felt very cozy and has an incredible comfortable king-sized bed. This room has a small patio with skylight, the other three rooms are situated onto the street.
The location is unbeatable: quiet by day, vibrant by night is the Bairro Alto (literally ‘up’ town) area surrounding the House4. Just a few minutes walk and you will find the viewing point over the downtown and the Alfama and St George’s castle on the other side. Next to it is the Gloria elevator which will bring you to the Baixa (downtown). The Bairro Alto is full of shops, bars, restaurants and galleries.
The House4 is definitely not for everyone. You have to appreciate the quirkyness of this place and the bohemian atmosphere of the area.
