Tulum resort adds treehouse

For those looking to experience a more rugged side of the popular Yucatán coastline, Design Hotels has opened the Treehouse, an addition to its existing resort in Tulum, Mexico.

Part of the 85-room Papaya Playa Beach Resort – which sits on a 900-meter stretch of Caribbean coast about 80 miles south of Cancun – the Treehouse is a two-story suite suspended on wooden stilts in the jungle. Its interiors contain locally sourced materials and recycled wood with white macramé detailing and an addition of 360-degree windows allows for views of the jungle and Caribbean Ocean.

The air-conditioned suite features a king-sized bed, terrace, and oceanfront and jungle views.

As with the resort’s 85 casitas and cabañas, the new Treehouse has been ecologically built using traditional Mayan construction techniques. Placing the structure on wooden stilts also minimized damage to local plant and animal life during the construction process, which the hotel says was important to Papaya Playa owner Emilio Heredia.
