The Myst Dong Khoi is a design hotel which intrigues with its irregular façade with oddly shaped and unevenly spaced windows. It is located in Ho Chi Minh’s (commonly known as Saigon) District 1, just a few minutes’ walk from the Mekong Riverside. Interiors put a contemporary spin on local traditions and showcase local artisanship. The hotel’s winding corridors with concrete ceilings and exposed sprinkler pipes are more reminiscent of the Saigon streetscape than a traditional hotel hallway. In the lobby and at the outdoor café, integrated industrial parts and scraps salvaged from the demolished 200-year-old Ba Son Shipyard across the river, can be admired. Rooms take cues from the traditional layouts of typical Vietnamese houses, complete with outdoor showers and small gardens that grow a variety of tropical flora that partially shield city views for more privacy.

Set in a refurbished 50s high-rise, the Emiliano Rio is a design hotel situated right on the Copacabana. Its dynamic perforated façade has quickly become an architectural icon, made all the more dramatic with cleaver balconied panels that fold back accordion-style to reveal unobstructed ocean views. Interiors are a throwback to Copacabana’s bohemian golden years, and revive the best of Brazilian modernism. The lobby – clad in concrete and stone, and anchored by an original Burle Marx panel – leads into a succession of quietly plush set-pieces including a huge vertical green garden in the restaurant, and a rooftop infinity pool and wellness zone overlooking the sea on the 11th and 12th floors.
